About Real Life Response

Real Life Response exists for the people who carry the job: the first responders who do the work, and the partners, parents, siblings, and kids whose lives are shaped by it. We provide virtual counselling built around the realities of that life, the shifts, the culture, the things that come home, delivered by registered clinicians who don’t need the job explained to them.

Why this practice exists

Ashley Kreze, MA, RP, RCC, founder of Real Life Response

I’m Ashley Kreze, a Registered Clinical Counsellor (BC) and Registered Psychotherapist (Ontario) with over 17 years of clinical experience. Real Life Response grew out of two things: the first responders, partners, and family members I’ve sat with in my practice, and someone much closer to home. My brother serves on the front line. I’ve watched, from the inside of a family, what that work asks of a person and of the people who love them. The missed holidays that nobody complains about. The shift that follows someone home. The way a family learns to read a face at the door.

What I kept seeing, in my office and in my own life, was the same gap: people doing their best to carry something heavy, with no one in their corner who actually understood the weight. Support that existed was often tied to the employer, wrapped in paperwork, or delivered by well-meaning clinicians who needed three sessions just to understand what a rotation does to a household. Real Life Response was built to be the other thing: private, independent, and fluent in this life from the first minute of the first session.

What we believe

The job affects more than the person on shift. Partners carry a real, clinical load of their own. So do parents, siblings, and adult children. You don’t need to wear the uniform to have been changed by it, and you don’t need anyone’s permission to get support for what’s yours.

Private means private. We are fully independent of every police service, fire department, ambulance service, employer, and workers’ compensation process. Nothing about your care, including the fact that you reached out, is shared with anyone without your written consent.

Earlier is better. Most people connected to this work reach out long after they should have. The strongest thing you can do for a first responder family isn’t to survive it quietly. It’s to start before the damage sets.

Culture fluency is clinical, not cosmetic. Therapy works faster when your therapist already understands hypervigilance at the dinner table, what a night rotation does to a marriage, and why some things can’t be talked about at home. Our clinicians are matched to this work on purpose.

How we work

Real Life Response is the first responder and family practice of Real Life Counselling, a virtual practice serving clients since 2009. Sessions are online over secure video, with evening and weekend appointments built around shift schedules. We offer couples counselling for first responders and their partners, and individual therapy for any family member carrying their own piece of the load. Most extended health benefit plans cover sessions with our registered clinicians, and receipts are provided for reimbursement.

It starts with a short intake form, two to five minutes, then we match you with the right therapist for your needs and your province. It’s almost always one person who reaches out first. That’s exactly how it’s supposed to work.

Ready when you are

Whether the support is for you, for the two of you, or for what you carry loving someone in this work, it starts with one short form.
